MK2K: Layering Pieces with Timeless Style
After two years of creating clothes for the junior and young contemporary market under the 213 Industry label, Los Angeles–based designer Michelle Kim launched MK2K, a contemporary knits line with a competitive price point and forward style. “213 is fun and flirty, MK2K is more simple and timeless—more my style,” Kim said.
The line of drapey sweaters, tops, dresses and leggings debuted in August at the Intermezzo Collection show in New York. Sticking to a serene palette of gray, taupe, cream and black, the collection features clean, understated design and comfortable fabrications. “It’s all about layering and mixing and matching,” Kim said. With fluttery dresses, slouchy belted sweaters, nubby leggings and a tailored, short-sleeve coat, there is plenty for a girl to mix and match. The only wovens in MK2K come in the formof shorts.
Key pieces for the line include oversize cable-knit sweaters, an exaggerated vest with pockets and a mod shift with a deep V-neck and slash pockets.
Shipping four to six times per year, the MK2K line boasts 30 to 40 pieces per delivery. Wholesale prices for the line range from $38 for a simple T-shirt to $190 for a modified pea coat. Key specialty boutiques, including Diavolina, Madison, Intermix and Hillary Rush, have picked up the line, which began shipping in October.
