More Mervyns
Hayward-based Mervyns has announced plans to open four new stores as part of the company’s new strategy to invest in its core markets in the West and Southwest. Two of the new stores will be located in San Jose, Calif., and National City, Calif. The retailer also plans to open stores in Gilbert, Ariz., and Brownsville, Texas. The new stores, which will open before the end of the year and employ about 150 people at each location, will feature brighter lighting and wider aisles. Mervyns officials said the company is planning to invest “several hundred million dollars” in the next two years in its existing stores and operations systems. Target Corp. owned Mervyns for 16 years until it sold the company two years ago to a group of private investors. After the sale, Mervyns closed stores in several states, including Oregon, Washington, Utah, Michigan and Oklahoma. The company operates 187 stores in 10 states.
