Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '06: Kelly Nishimoto
Los Angeles designer Kelly Nishimoto embraced the very California concept of fusion and paid homage to her Japanese and Scottish ancestry at her March 22 runway show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios.
Nishimoto mixed red plaid and kimonos for her Fall/Winter/Holiday 2006 collection that featured 36 looks, ranging from red carpet gowns to cargo pants to wrap dresses to corsets.
The collection’s major inspirations seemed to be illustrated by Nishimoto’s plaid skirts and Japanese-style wrap dresses.
Nishimoto also showed her more whimsical side with her “Loveralls,” dark silk overall shorts with a big red heart sewn on the garment’s midriff.
Shifting to a more romantic mood, the designer also showed a red gown covered with black lace that seemed to be influenced by the mysterious sensuality of flamenco dance. —Andrew Asch
