Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '06: P.KaBu/Maggie Barry
In an event that was equal parts performance art, Cirque du Soleil-esque theatrics and fashion show, Maggie Barry’s collection acted as both costume and theme. Held at the Cooper Design Space as part of P.KaBu’s Salon de la Mode on March 17, the Los Angeles designer didn’t adhere to catwalk convention.
Models in Spanish-inspired gowns tangoed, men in matador tights circled Barry’s circular runway-cum-stage. A tiny dancer in a babydoll tutu somersaulted through the air. “I wanted to give the audience a show—and I wanted them to be able to see the texture of the clothes and get the vibe of the collection,” Barry said.
While several of the pieces seemed more suited for bullfighting, the Spanish- themed collection had several standouts. An austere midnight blue velvet gown and a lace-sided flamenco dress seemed destined for the red carpet. A collection of dresses rendered in bright neons and tropical shades were reminiscent of the Mediterranean, perfect for a fall cruise. The designer also showed an inky column dress and a flowing purple tunic, both in jersey.
Barry embraced a fitted silhouette and a Goth sensibility. Black leather panels sassed up a little black dress and sexy-secretary pencil skirts were rendered in silver stretch fabric. A dose of sweetness was found in tiny ruffles and ruching on blouses. —Erin Barajas
