Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '06: Kevan Hall
Images of Diana Ross in the 1975 film “Mahogany” were the inspiration for L.A. designer Kevan Hall’s Fall ’06 collection seen on the runway March 19 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif.
In the movie, Ross played a young, struggling Chicago woman studying design at night to become a world-renowned fashion force.
“The collection is really about sleek silhouettes, beautiful biased-cut gowns, and rich jewel tones like emerald, amethyst, topaz, and alabaster mixed with chocolate brown,” said the former Halston designer.
Last year, Hall signed a licensing deal with Michael Pappas Furs. So fur played a big role in Hall’s collection, which had 46 looks on the catwalk. Finnish raccoon on the collar and cuffs of a reefer coat was paired with tweed pants. A mink vest added a certain richness to a light-colored blouse and cuffed tweed pants. An amethystcolored raccoon stroller coat jazzed up a brown satin skirt and mahogany turtleneck. Fur was dyed lavender or aqua to create muffs that matched long gowns.
Silhouettes were sleek, sophisticated and clean. Pants had skinny legs. Dresses were fitted on the top but billowy on the bottom. Red carpet dresses, one of Hall’s specialties, flowed with soft fabrics such as charmeuse and taffeta.
“We are staying true to our look and our concept for a world-traveled chic woman,” Hall said. —Deborah Belgum
