China Exports
Exports from China outpaced economists’ estimates last month by as much as $3 billion. January’s surplus of $9.5 billion trumped estimates of $6.3 billion. January exports rose 28 percent from a year earlier to $65 billion, while imports rose 25.4 percent to $55.5 billion, according to Chinese customs officials. Analysts had warned that the data could be biased downward because of the lunar new year, during which most businesses close. Following the report, the Bush administration vowed to take a tougher stance by beefing up enforcement staff and possible trade litigation over intellectual property rights.
