Punk Rock Still Growing in Grn Apple Tree
Punk rock was such a constructive force in the life of Luis Pulido Jr. that he recently threw a party at punk nightclub Mr. T’s Bowl in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The latest punk bulletin from Pulido, the owner of Los Angeles– based streetwear label Grn Apple Tree, is a line of Tshirts— which he dubbed “I See The Future In My Past”— sold at such retailers as Nordstrom and hip specialty chains The Closet and Active Ride. The T-shirts bear the images of the flyers he designed in the 1980s for such legendary punk acts as the Ramones and Social Distortion.
Grn Apple Tree also produces such garments as Eisenhower jackets and T-shirts bearing images of foreign movie queen Anita Ekberg from her iconic role in the 1960 film “La Dolce Vita.”
The Germs, one of Pulido’s punk inspirations, played the April 14 gig at Mr. T’s. The band started playing occasionally last year after a 25-year hiatus, but Pulido thought the group’s spirit was still fresh.
“Their do-it-yourself ethic influenced me to start a band,” Pulido said of the landmark Los Angeles punk group. The ethic later snowballed into Pulido designing his own graphics and opening Grn Apple Tree. —Andrew Asch
