Seeking Apparel for Hurricane Relief
Several industry organizations are mounting campaigns to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The Intersection, which comprises the Fashion District Business Improvement District, California Market Center, Gerry Building, The New Mart, Cooper Design Space and Designers & Agents, along with Warnaco Swimwear Group, the California Fashion Association and California Apparel News, have coordinated a benefit sample sale Sept. 30–Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the 11th Floor of the Cooper Design Space at 860 South Los Angeles St. in Los Angeles. Manufacturer donations will be accepted throughout the week of Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the 11th floor of the Cooper Design Space.
“We hope to stock the sale with the ’best of brand’ items from the region’s manufacturers,” said Cooper Design Space owner Steve Hirsh.
Proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross. The organizers are also accepting monetary donations by credit card. For more information, call Ilse Metchek at (213) 688-6288.
Fashion Business Inc., the nonprofit business incubator for new designers and small businesses, is seeking apparel donations for an online auction it will conduct through eBay to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina. The organization is seeking branded clothing and other saleable items. Donations can be dropped off or shipped to the FBI Resource Center in The New Mart, 127 E. Ninth St., suite 212, Los Angeles, CA 90015. Donations will be tax deductible. For more information, call (213) 892-1669.
MAGIC International is also seeking donations of clothing, shoes and underwear to be stored in a secured warehouse until disaster relief organizations are ready to accept apparel donations. For more information, call 877-554-4834.
Huntington Beach, Calif. surfwear manufacturer Quiksilver Inc. is coordinating a relief effort in conjunction with retailer Fast Forward of Texas, which is distributing clothing to evacuees in Texas, Arizona and Georgia. Roadway and Freight Brokers freight companies are donating shipping services, including picking up clothing donations from manufacturers. Items sought include T-shirts, knits and woven shortsleeve shirts, shorts, pants, sandals, shoes, backpacks, school items, and hats or caps. Sizes XL through XXXL are especially in demand.
