San Francisco Fashion Week '05: Mel Rose

The Mel Rose collection, by San Francisco native Melissa Rose, was inspired by mod fashions from the 1960s. A skimpy black-and-red striped two-piece hooded tank suit, a yellow floral- print tube dress ala Betsey Johnson, and a white satin floor-length halter dress with a 1970s floral print and matching scarf were just a few looks at the show. Rose also included some menswear, such as a pair of green-and-black calflength swim trunks with an exotic print. Faux fur featured prominently throughout the show; the offbeat designer even paired faux-fur foot warmers with swimwear.

A model wearing burgundy calf-length pants and a mustard-colored faux-fur vest was eerily reminiscent of a character from “The Flintstones.”

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom showed up to cheer on his soon-to-be–ex-wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom, who made a guest appearance on the runway in a fuchsia-and-maroon off-the-shoulder dress with multi-layered ruffles.
