Dominican Republic Approves CAFTA
Legislators in the Dominican Republic approved the Central American Free Trade Agreement, joining El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and the United States in ratifying the pact. The action was applauded by U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman. “This agreement levels the playing field for American workers, farmers and businesses; expands choices for consumers; and strengthens democracies in our neighborhood,” he said. The United States will be coordinating with the CAFTA governments over the next few weeks to determine when to put the agreement into effect. Costa Rica and Nicaragua have yet to ratify the pact.
