L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: Sue Wong

Known for her elaborate runway shows, Sue Wong didn’t disappoint when she took the wraps off her Spring ’06 collection, seen Oct. 19 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios.

Wong, whose company has grown as quickly as her reputation, had 65 looks that kept spectators busy contemplating the intricate nature of each piece. “My clothes are really for the eternal goddess or seductress,” the designer said. “I try to appeal to the eternal feminine in all women.”

The show started with a grouping called “World Tribe.” This section of dresses and skirts took its cue from India, Africa and Eastern Europe with bright colors in tie-dyed fabric and mirrored embellishments.

The “Exotica” category, with Cleopatra and sarong gowns, was influenced by the Middle East. And the jungle-bright colors of Brazil were seen in Wong’s floral silk charmeuse gowns and halter dresses that blended oranges with greens or floated in a bright blue blur.

Wong, known for her beaded flapper dresses, revived that look for Spring. She also had a collection of ball gowns, dresses with petal skirts, Edwardian-influenced designs and wedding attire that were resplendent in silk charmeuse and organza fabrics. —Deborah Belgum
