L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: Single
Designer Galena Sobolev took a page from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ memoirs of traveling through Europe as a young woman and incorporated that style into her Spring ’06 collection for her label, Single.
The designer, born in Odessa, now part of Ukraine, previewed her soft and feminine looks on the runway Oct. 16 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios.
The designer veered away from her more sexy silhouettes seen in past seasons and concentrated on lighter and softer looks found in crochet tops and lace-trimmed blouses. She used lots of linen, cotton, voile and silk to create a “beach-beneath-your-feet” feeling.
“I was very inspired by the looks I saw in the photographs published in ’One Special Summer,’ written by Jackie Kennedy before she married and was still Jackie Bouvier,” said Sobolev, who started her line in 1994.
The designer incorporated soft colors into ethereal creations such as a voile top trimmed with delicate European lace paired with cuffed shorts. Cropped linen pants were also a staple in the collection.
“It is almost granny couture but cleaned up,” Sobolev said. “It’s as if your Victorian mother ran into Jackie O.”
