L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: NeoDandi

Seattle-based design duo Tamara and Nillartey DeOsu made their Los Angeles debut on Oct. 16 at the Viceroy Hotel in Santa Monica, Calif., with their 21/2-year-old line, NeoDandi. Inspired by the architecture and “wabi-sabi” aesthetic of Japan, the collection featured both original designs and reconstructed vintage looks.

“We use clothing to say something about the world and beauty itself,” DeOsu said. The collection included a series of reconstructed denim looks, such as reworked plaid shirts paired with cropped denim jeans for men and denim jackets, skirts and dresses for women. Other styles for men included rock ’n’ roll–style reconstructed military jackets and long “Matrix”- like trench coats pieced together from vintage blazers and dress pants. For women, the designers created “Jar” skirts inspired by Japanese pottery and a variety of edgy evening gowns. “Some designers design for the idea that they have,” DeOsu said. “We start with the idea and design for the person.” —N.
