L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: Naqada

Mexican designer Octavio Carlin’s Spring/Summer ’06 collection was inspired by actress and artist Natacha Rambova, wife of the iconic silent-film actor Rudolph Valentino. “She is my muse for the entire collection, but I also focused on structural, sculptural and flowing elements,” Carlin said.

His show on Oct. 17 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios, featured classic noir elements and a recurring original print. A palette of black and white was accented by teal prints and touches of gold and red satin.

Styles included ruched column gowns, fitted smoking jackets and tuxedo pants, bustle skirts, black lace blouses and shrunken boleros. Long, slim keyhole jackets were paired with gauzy, asymmetrical dresses. The designer also showed a group of white and red satin dresses. —Erin Barajas
