L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: Deborah Lindquist
Deborah Lindquist’s Spring 2006 collection was inspired by mythical sirens and mermaids. But the clothes were constructed of materials Lindquist deemed good for the environment, such as hemp and recycled scarves.
The Los Angeles–based designer showed the collection Oct. 18 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif. The show’s 36 looks spanned sunny, contemporary fashions to laid-back evening wear, but many of the pieces seemed to focus on a common foundation. They were built around the bustier.
Lindquist’s Spring 2006 bustiers were made out of a beige raffia material and paired with a fishnet T-shirt and a hemp-and-shell skirt. Other bustier styles were constructed out of beaded silk lace and paired with a silky mermaid skirt.
“It’s a fun shape,” Lindquist said of the bustier. “It’s sexy and feminine. We’re not trying to hit you over the head with overt sexuality.” When Lindquist was not exploring the possibilities of the bustier, her casual tops included V-necks and halters bearing marine themes. —Andrew Asch
