L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: Coco Kliks
Coco Kliks debuted her new high-end contemporary line Oct. 17 on the runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios. The collection, inspired by Tahiti, featured several groups reminiscent of “Mutiny on the Bounty,” including a shipwrecked sailor group. The collection also featured a colorful “water and spirits” group and a lush jungleinspired group representing the native islanders and the natural flora and fauna of the tropical South Pacific islands.
“In the more general, abstract way, it’s really about discovery of yourself and the world and getting a new point of view, a new perspective on your world around you,” said Kliks.
The collection was nearly four times larger than her past collections and featured lesscomplicated designs. Still, the line maintained a luxury feel and Kliks’ signature details— what she refers to as “the Coco touch.” Jute ropes, coconut buttons, abalone shell motifs, raffia details and handmade flowers decorated Kliks’ designs. She used a neutral palette in cream, white, beige, tan and brown, accented with soft, muted shades in willow, sage and raspberry and deeper tones of tobacco red, chocolate brown and marigold yellow.
Kliks experimented with new fibers, such as Tencel for knits and canvas. She also “rediscovered” volume by working with new silhouettes in cotton, linen and rayon blends. —N. Jayne Seward
