S.F. Apparel Protest

A group of unemployed apparel workers gathered at San Francisco City Hall on Nov. 21 to ask city leaders for help in securing jobs for former garment-industry employees. Organizer the Chinese Progressive Network pointed to the plight of more than 900 garment workers who have lost their jobs over the last two years as companies have downsized or shifted production overseas. The protesters were asking San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to create a taskforce to look at ways to preserve the city’s apparel industry and to attract new companies to the area.
