L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: Spy Zone Exchange

Los Angeles–based Jacky Elkaim launched Spy Zone Exchange four years ago as a T-shirt line. He has expanded into a full collection now, and the line is making inroads on the L.A. fashion scene. The company’s first Los Angeles Fashion Week appearance was Oct. 21 at the P.KaBu runway series.

Since those T-shirt days, Spy has grown into a more rounded collection of feminine silhouettes that tap into hot trends of the moment. For Spring, the company touched on a little Western and visited combat themes with lots of camouflage prints, denim, midriff tops and Spanish-inspired tiered skirts.

Elkaim offered a variety of short wrap tops that hit on the Western theme as well as more classical silhouettes. There was also a dressier way to go, with gauchos, colorful palazzo pants and tiered and printed skirts in natural materials.

Elkaim continued his attention to unique trims and detailing, which have become something of a trademark for the company. Boleros, tees and tanks were lushly embellished with lace, embroidery and crystals.

“Spy has always been my ’freedom of expression,’” said Elkaim. “The line is so eclectic and alive that it was great to share and see the enthusiastic reaction of the audience.” —Robert McAllister
