L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: Jared Gold

By the time designer Jared Gold moved his company from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City in 2003, he had already built a devoted following for his theatrical, conceptual designs. This season, he returned to Los Angeles to host a runway show that drew many of his fashionable fans, customers and longtime retailers.

The show, held on Oct. 22 at the P.KaBu runway series, did not disappoint. The collection was titled “Glinka,” after 19th-century Russian composer Mikhail Glinka, and included heavily embellished and detailed pieces and a riot of jewel-toned shades.“It definitely was very conceptual and felt very European,” Gold said.

“I wanted to do something that would be a little revolutionary—not that I wasn’t trying to be revolutionary before, but it felt like someone needed to show up and be fearless.”

Among many strong pieces, standouts included an elaborately detailed corset in turquoise and a three-quarter-length coat with a ruffled collar that was shown in dramatic black with a clear foil-printed pattern and in an iridescent turquoise print. A mad-carnival print of geometric shapes, paisleys and florals in shocking yellow, pink and turquoise was used sparingly as trim on the turquoise jacket, as well as sumptuously in a full-length ball skirt. —Alison A.
