L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: Erica Rose

Though Erica Rose Trumpower’s collection had a romantic, feminine feeling, the designer was thinking of parachute jumpers and international current events when designing her line, shown on the P.Ka.Bu runway on Oct. 22.

“I wanted my line to resonate that [political and environmental] fragility of our time,” said Trumpower, adding that the message was not meant to be overt. The light and airy fabrics and voluminous parachute bubble skirts were a nod to the idea of fragility.

The designer returned to her roots as a craftsman and handsewed the entire line with many one-of-a-kind pieces from reconstructed vintage clothing. Fabrics such as Chinese silk embroidered blouses, tiers of theatrical ruffled lace and vintage slips were sewn together with a patchwork quality.

A rose motif that played on the designer’s name ran throughout the line, including crochet rose appliqueacute;s and rose prints.

Trumpower continued with the wide-waistband motif she used in previous seasons, this time using contrasting prints and adding men’s pants to mix. —Rhea Cortado
