L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: Candice Held
In Candice Held’s hands, a scarf is no mere accessory—it’s the entire ensemble. The designer presented her Candice Held Vintage collection of scarf-based dresses, skirts and tops on Oct. 22 at the P.KaBu runway series.
Using up to nine scarves per piece, Held proved her deft hand at color and pattern mixing. She layered souvenir scarves over traditional paisley patterns, checks and abstract designs. The skirts, which wrap around the hips and tie into a loosely gathered bustle, were also shown as bohemian halter tops that could be tied in the front or in the back.
Held, who is based in Los Angeles, works with a New York–based business partner, Jordana Magin, who heads up sales and marketing for the company. It was Magin who first suggested adding straps to one of the skirts so that it could be worn as a blouse.
The designer also showed a few original pieces in retro-inspired prints on a pebbled cotton fabric, which the designer refers to as the “dish towel line.” Held produces a vintage-inspired silk group in China as well and said she hopes to expand the original-print side of her business. —Alison A.
