L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: Buffalo David Bitton and David Bitton

It’s a Canadian-based label, but Buffalo David Bitton captured the mood of the American West like a native. Buffalo David Bitton and David Bitton showed collections inspired by Native American culture with a mod twist at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios on Oct. 18.

The over 20-year-old company staged its first fashion show this August in Canada, where it has over 40 stores.

Farah Dib, advertising and marketing director for Buffalo David Bitton, said the label chose to show in Los Angeles to strengthen the brand’s presence in the United States.

The laid-back jeans and sportswear of Buffalo for women featured 1960s mod graphics such as paisley swirls, flowers and butterflies on the cotton jersey tops. Embroidered jeans and skirts with bird and floral motifs gave a carefree hippie vibe to the denim core. The Native American influence was seen in small details, such as a jeweled centerpiece anchoring strips of long fringe down the front of a loose strapless blouse and plastic beads on the ends of spaghetti-strap ties.

Buffalo for men had a retro beach feel with striped polo shirts, track jackets and vintage-wash jeans.

The more feminine and dressed-up David Bitton collection used silky fabrics and rich tones of color. Silhouettes were more streamlined, such as a pair of wide-leg cargo trousers with a non-distressed wash and a fitted hook-and-eye corset with dainty lace trim. —Rhea Cortado
