Carson Votes for Mall

The National Football League’s loss could be retail’s gain.

In a special meeting held May 22, the city council of Carson, Calif., voted 4–0 to scrap plans to build an NFL stadium on a 157-acre landfill. The council instead voted to construct a shopping center and housing tract in the Los Angeles County city nestled between Torrance and Long Beach.

Jerry Groomes, Carson’s city manager, traveled to Las Vegas this week to pitch the city at the International Conference of Shopping Centers meeting there. Carson’s dominant retail area, South Bay Pavilion at Carson, was built in 1973 and is anchored by JC Penney, Sears and Ikea. The median household income in Carson is $52,284, according to a municipal Web site.
