Avery Unveils 'Error-Free' RFID Printer
Pasadena, Calif.–based Avery Dennison Corp. has released a radio frequency identification (RFID) labeling system aimed at reducing misreads and mis-shipments caused by faulty labels.
Through RFID technology, encoded tags are read from scanning devices to track shipments along the supply chain. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and other retailers are mandating that their top suppliers equip shipments with RFID labels.
Avery’s ALX RFID print/apply system was designed to eliminate the misreads that often occur during shipments. It encodes and prints unique RFID labels and automatically applies the encoded labels to cartons, cases and pallets. During the encoding process, the system detects and rejects miscoded or unreadable RFID labels. The system then encodes and prints the next label and applies it to the targeted item.
The system also features a “jump-the-bump” capability that adapts to the raised profile of RFID chips embedded into labels. It also is able to read various sizes and formats and can adapt to inline print/apply operations on conveyors and assembly lines, said Avery officials. —Robert McAllister
