Make Way for Nobody
For the past year, Odessa Bowden has run Nobody Jones in Los Angeles’ Leimert Park district, importing boutique style to South Los Angeles and giving designers of color a place to experiment and sell clothes.
On March 8, she opened a Nobody Jones boutique at 5522 Pico Blvd. The grand opening will be marked with a fashion show on April 1.
The new Nobody Jones features a similar deacute;cor to its sister boutique. The walls are a mod tangerine color accented by blue-andwhite stripes. The new store carries many of the same lines as the original shop, including Nobody Blue, a line of dresses and separates designed by Bowden and Suzette Baltazar. Nobody Blue’s pieces go up to size 12.
“It’s not for a stick-figure woman,” Bowden said. “It’s for a woman with hips and breasts.”
Other labels include Los Angeles–based T-shirt line Dirty Milk, which features felt lettering with slogans such as “Slightly Ghetto,” and Deeply Rooted, a Christian T-shirt line showcasing Biblical proverbs. Price points range from $28 to $80.
Bowden franchised the new store to her 26-year-old sister, Miranda, a first-time retailer.
Bowden said she plans to build seven Nobody Jones boutiques, including shops in Atlanta, Miami and New York. For more information on Nobody Jones on Pico Boulevard, call (323) 934-5123. —Andrew Asch
