Denise Carolyn Opens Second Boutique
More than six years ago, Denise Carolyn Meyerson was selling accessories from a kiosk at the Sherman Oaks Fashion Square. Last month, she and her husband, Ben, opened the second Denise Carolyn boutique, located in the exclusive Los Angeles coastal enclave of Pacific Palisades.
Accessories and gifts paved the way for their success, but Ben Meyerson said he believed much of their future was in clothes. “It opens a whole new market; it allows us more flexibility and more profitability,” he said.
Eventually, 80 percent of the Denise Carolyn merchandise mix will be apparel. Currently, clothing makes up 30 percent of the store.
Denise Carolyn sells Los Angeles–based labels, including Moss Mills; Ankh, which makes tie-dyed T-shirts with sequin embellishments; and New York–based Shrine, which manufactures shrugs. T-shirts bearing images from the upcoming Warner Bros. movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” are also selling well, according to Ben Meyerson.
The couple wanted to open a store in Pacific Palisades for the past two years. They said they thought their boutique could make a difference because many of the residents had told them they preferred not to drive down Pacific Coast Highway to shop in West Los Angeles.
The boutique is decorated with bright, South Beach–style colors. Denise Meyerson said she hopes the shades will immediately put her customers in a good mood as they browse the 600-square-foot shop, which is divided into alcoves.
Greeting customers is a section offering clothing such as designer T-shirts. In the footwear alcove, shoes are displayed like paintings in an art gallery. A children’s area features toddlers’ clothes and toys, which kids can play with as their mothers shop.
