Terence Luk: Perfecting the Technical
A clipping for Olympus Fashion Week in New York hangs on Terence Luk’s cubicle wall. Luk recently returned from the Gen Art Styles 2005 show in New York, a competition the designer used to sharpen his skills in hopes of launching his own line and someday adding his name to the list of designers showing at Olympus Fashion Week.
The Otis School of Art & Design graduate currently works as the design director for Hong Yuan Industrial Co., the knitting manufacturer whose client roster includes Ashley Paige, BCBG and Arden B.
“Technical is very important for designers. We can’t only be artistic designers because you have to learn all the products for the industry,” said Luk, who took a job with HY because he felt it was important to bring his design knowledge of wovens into the field of knitwear.
Luk’s talent for knits caught the eye of Gen Art, and his knitwear-based collection, featuring chunky to pointelle textures with metallic detailing, was nominated for Perrier’s “Bubbling Under” Award at the organization’s show.
“As a designer, you have to challenge yourself; you have to open your vision,” Luk said. “Otis taught us to be open to accept other criticism. If there is a competition, send your best collection and let the professional people criticize it. I think this is good.” —Rhea Cortado
