Brother Unveils Garment Printer

Bridgewater, N.J.–based Brother International Corp. will release an ink-jet printer designed to print on garment fabrics.

The GT-541, to be released in July, features a 14-by-16-inch printing area and uses waterbased ink, which can be cured by standard heat presses, eliminating the need for conveyor dryers, said company officials.

Brother Marketing Manager Matthew Rhome said the company tested the printer for more than a year at several embroidery and screen-printer businesses before rolling the model out. “We placed 29 units and imprinted more than 100,000 shirts in a real-world setting to make sure we delivered the quality and durability we projected,” he said.

Rhome added that because there is no setup, tear-down, cleanup, screens, squeegees or pallet adhesives to deal with, the system is faster and less expensive than screen-printing systems.
