Trina Turk in Spring Bloom
Trina Turk had added a mischievous blast of color to the prim-and-proper styles of her Fall 2004 collection. But for the Trina Turk label’s Resort 2004/Spring 2005 collection, prim-and-proper gave way to some of the splashiest colors the designer has ever used. The latest collection was viewed on Feb. 8 at Turk’s store in Los Angeles.
Turk’s “Orbit” print was the star of the show, and the pattern was aptly named. Swirls of bright fuchsia, orange and chocolate brown spread throughout the collection of men’s pants and jackets, women’s dresses and shirts, and hats and handbags.
If these colors were reminiscent of the bright, optimistic clothes of the Sunset Strip’s rock and arts scene in the late 1960s, the comparison was fully intended, according to Turk. The collection’s main inspiration was Southern California looks from the Summer of Love to the early 1970s.
“It was great that everybody wore these crazy things every day to work then,” Turk told the crowd of professors, students and friends of Los Angeles–based Otis Institute of Art & Design assembled at her boutique.
The college sponsored the fashion soiree, which featured informal modeling. Even Otis President Samuel Hoi got in the act by modeling a pair of Orbit pants.
Other patterns featured the “Links” print, which showcased black chain-like shapes on a white field. Turk introduced a “Watercolor Floral” print and a leopard-skin silk chiffon print, as well.
Turk said she is considering opening a boutique in New York in 2005 and increasing her distribution in Europe.
