Target to Anchor Westfield Topanga

The Westfield Group announced that discount retailer Target will be the fifth anchor at the Westfield Topanga shopping center, which is undergoing a $300 million redevelopment program.

Richard Green, vice chairman of Westfield’s U.S. operations, said that with the addition of Target, the Canoga Park, Calif.–based mall will offer a compelling mix of convenience and luxury. Neiman Marcus is scheduled to build a store at Topanga in 2008. A new Nordstrom, the Target store and the rest of the mall redevelopment will be built in 2006. These new tenants will increase the size of the mall, which opened more than 40 years ago, to 1.6 million square feet. Sears and Robinsons-May also anchor the center.

Plans call for Target to occupy a 160,000-square-foot building located on the north side of the shopping center, by Owensmouth Avenue. The redevelopment also will include an estimated 100 new specialty shops and an atrium walkway called “The Canyon.” Forest- and river-like landscaping will give the space the feeling of an open-air shopping center.

Westfield Topanga should become a destination for fashion retail, said a Westfield representative. The adjacent Westfield Shoppingtown Promenade, also owned by Westfield, will be an entertainment and lifestyle center.
