CMC Passes Safety Test

For the second time in two weeks, the California Market Center in Los Angeles was evacuated, but this time it was a planned operation.

The center’s management on Dec. 21 conducted an annual fire drill as required by law and evacuated the 3-million-square-foot center floor by floor, forcing an interruption in business for about an hour and a half. About a week ago, the center was evacuated when a suspicious package was found on the sixth floor. The package turned out to be nonthreatening.

“We changed the drill from how they were done in the past and evacuated everyone and had sweepers cover every floor. We just wanted to make sure everyone knew where to go and meet up in case of a real emergency,” said a CMC representative.

The fire drill forced several hundred workers out into the busy streets of the Los Angeles Fashion District, which was packed because of the Holiday shopping rush. —Robert McAllister
