Acting Labor Commissioner Named

Robert A. Jones has been named the state’s acting labor commissioner until a full-time person is found to take over the job, according to the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency, which made the announcement Dec. 19.

Jones is chief counsel for the California Department of Industrial Relations’ Division of Labor Standards Enforcement. He will keep his position as chief counsel while acting as labor commissioner.

Jones replaces Donna Dell, who stepped down Dec. 9 after serving for a little more than a year in that job.

The labor commissioner oversees the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement and its 400 employees. The division’s job is to enforce minimum labor standards, making sure employees are not abused or forced to work in sweatshop conditions. It adjudicates wage claims, investigates discrimination and public works complaints, and enforces labor law. —Deborah Belgum
