Nova Protest
More than 100 garment workers protested in San Francisco on April 12 after more than 80 workers were unexpectedly laid off from Nova Knits Inc., according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The workers charge that the dismissals violate the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which requires that companies give workers 60 days written notice before mass layoffs or factory closures. According to the report, a Nova spokesperson said the company has been struggling to compete with overseas manufacturers. The company has dwindled from about 150 employees last fall to fewer than 25.
