L.A. Fashion Week Fall '05: Grey Ant
Blending hip-hop and Southern culture may seem like an oddball formula for Grey Ant’s Fall 2005 collection. But the approach worked for Grant Krajecki, who presented 27 smart streetwear looks March 18 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City.
Highlighted by performances from frisky campers, “Solid Gold” dancers and spandex-wearing “Fly Girls,” the show included silk jumpsuits, quilted vests, racer-style leggings, fitted flannel shirts and oversize hooded jackets that fit tightly around the shoulders and hips.
Krajecki, who previously lived in Banner Elk, N.C., said his “city taste” seasoned the apparel inspired by Southern white and modern black cultures, and a miniskirt incorporated into a big gray hooded sweat shirt reflected that style. The designer said he will make his quilted jackets reversible so that wearers can show off the chiffon lining that comes in bright red, powder blue or black-and-cream stripes.
The colors evoked a walk on a farm in autumn, ranging from navy and pumpkin to forest green and lavender. For those tired of low hip-huggers, Krajecki introduced jeans with high waists and clean washes in light and dark blue. —Khanh T.L. Tran
