Los Angeles Fashion Week Spring '05: Hippie Chick Style

Designer Patricia Bosse often goes by the Spanish nickname “Vida,” or “Life,” because one would never classify her as a shrinking violet. She has been featured on Fox Sports World’s “Extreme Sports” and has hosted several MTV-like shows on the Spanish-language network Univision.

So when Bosse created her line, Hippie Chick Style, two years ago, she decided not to go with the traditional. Instead, she designed a line that employed megadoses of hemp woven fabric and a plasticized hemp material that looks like denim.

Her styles are reminiscent of the late 1940s and early 1950s, but her line’s theme harkens back to the hippie days of the 1970s.

“I loved the essence of that era,” said the petite designer, who studied at Long Beach City College. “And I felt it needed to be implemented.”

Bosse showed just how she implemented the 1970s idea of “peace and love” into her Spring 2005 collection on Oct. 30 at P. Ka Bu, held at the Blu Pinstripe Warehouse near downtown Los Angeles.

Earth tones dominated much of the collection. And the Spanish words “Libertad y Amor,” or “Freedom and Love,” were printed on many of the knicker pants and cocktail dresses that came sauntering down the runway.

Silhouettes ranged from ruffled miniskirts to suits in striped and denim-like fabrics.Deborah Belgum
