Los Angeles Fashion Week Spring '05: Naqada by Octavio Carlin
Octavio Carlin revealed his Naqada Spring ’05 line on Oct. 29, the final night of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City.
Carlin added more sportswear to his collection, which had previously focused on evening gowns. He also collaborated with menswear designer Donny Barrios (formerly of dbWARE) for the debut of Naqada Men.
“The collaboration has been amazing,” Carlin said. “We’re very happy to be working with him.”
Carlin said he wanted to create eclectic Los Angeles styles with a futuristic edge. He combined casual tanks, fun tops, boleros and long jackets with shorts, pedal pushers, and long skirts for a look that could be dressed up or down. But he did not forgo evening looks entirely; gowns continued to be very important to the collection.
For men, styles included tunics, polo shorts, zip-front jackets, sporty blazers and long trench coats paired with Bermuda shorts, pedal pushers and trousers. A neutral palette of ecru, light blue, chartreuse, olive, brown and black was accented with hot pink, yellow and kelly green. Fabrics included four-ply silk, moire, poplin, cotton, denim, Italian shirting and striped cotton jersey. Leather fish pins and appliqueacute;s, bows, gold jewelry and silk-screened images of Carlin’s pug, Cairo, added whimsical details to the collection. —N. Jayne Seward
