Los Angeles Fashion Week Spring '05: Eduardo Lucero
Designer Eduardo Lucero set a glamorous tone with the tiedyed gown that opened his Oct. 29 runway show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City. The Los Angeles designer didn’t let up on the red-carpet looks, immediately following the opener with a wrapped number in liquid aqua satin.
The collection offered a few cocktail pieces, including a turquoise beaded lace dress with a front slit and a floral side-tie blouse over a bright-orange ruffled ombreacute; skirt. Lucero touched on the streetwear-inspired looks he showed last season but softened the color palette, pairing a hooded gold lace jacket with layered chiffon pants in sea-foam green. He also showed his masterful hand with fit in a second-skin crocheted dress and a hibiscus-print halter gown that accentuated the model’s curves. There were plenty of pieces sporting subtle details, including a sea-foam gown featuring a draped hem tucked with tiny rhinestone buttons and a taupe dress with a plunging back and a cascade of abalone-shell buttons spilling from the nape of the model’s neck.
Lucero also experimented with unusual textiles, including a raffia fabric that looked like draped twine over raw silk. He worked strips of embroidered ribbon into a form-fitting gown with a wrapped bodice and layered train. And he constructed a pair of matte gold dresses from a sequined fabric that he reversed to show just a hint of shine at the neckline and back. —Alison A. Nieder
