Los Angeles Fashion Week Spring '05: True Meaning

Marc Bohbot, creative director of Los Angeles–based True Meaning, kept the caftan shirts and bottoms of the label’s Spring 2005 collection simple for a strategic reason. He wanted all eyes to focus on the collection’s jackets.

Bohbot said he hopes women will treat jackets like a prized accessory. The 35 looks represented at the runway show on Oct. 28 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City concentrated on short, tight boucleacute; jackets that experimented with an array of designs and patterns, ranging from bolero-cut jackets with exotic North African patterns to prim jackets with distressed edges on the lapels. Metallic linens added luminescence to other looks.

True Meaning also experimented with jackets out of bounds for the more traditional set. The show started off with a 1970s rock ’n’ roll feel, embodied in a jacquard motorcycle jacket layered with scarves.

Other nontraditional pieces included a white linen knee-length jacket, a coffee-colored satin pantsuit, and for a touch of glamour, a silver satin evening dress. —Andrew Asch
