Pluck

Colorful, lightweight and ultra-hip, Pluck is a unique line of earrings made from organic and rare feathers.

Designer Oakason Hoffman was inspired to create the line in September 2003, when she and several of her girlfriends wanted to wear lightweight earrings with brilliant colors that would “pop.” The experiment evolved into a chic line of earrings made from 250 types of feathers, including rare varieties sourced from around the world. Hoffman finds most of the feathers in Brazil, Peru, Afghanistan and the United States.

Despite the name of the line, most of the feathers are organic, meaning they are shed naturally from the bird rather than plucked. Some of the most popular styles in the line are made from rare baby peacock feathers and colorful Brazilian feathers in brilliant shades of fuchsia and purple.

The earrings are offered in single-feather and double- and triple-layered styles. Color combinations include purple and lavender; turquoise and gold; red and black; fuchsia, black and turquoise; and purple, lavender and green. Hoffman dyes some of the feathers herself to create original looks and also offers some extravagant tribal looks that are held together by porcupine quills.

Wholesale prices range from $20 to $40. The line is currently carried at American Rag, Scout, Noni and Vice in Los Angeles and at the Hollywood Trading Co. at Fred Segal in Santa Monica, Calif.
