Kaci Bacher
Kaci Bacher may have created the perfect wardrobe solution for the young fashionista moms of the world with her eponymous line of semi-tailored separates. The sportswear line, which launched in April for Fall 2004, offers a hip, yet sophisticated approach to dressing with both comfort and practicality.
While new to the fashion scene, Bacher has years of industry support behind her. Bacher’s husband and business partner, John Bathurst, who launched the RLX Polo Sport brand during his eight years at Ralph Lauren, is currently the vice president of the QuikSilverEdition brand. In addition, Bathurst, who will oversee the department store accounts for Bacher’s line, has over 20 years of retail industry experience, which includes stints working in product development and as a senior buyer for Nordstrom.
After completing design school and interning with Richard Tyler, Bacher decided in June 2003 to pursue her passion in clothing design. Inspired by her personal lifestyle as a fulltime mother, Bacher wanted to create a clothing line that was functional for her everyday needs.
“I like tailoring with a little edge, a little funkiness to it—not too stuffy, something just a little different—that you wouldn’t expect,” she said.
Bacher’s collection includes mix-andmatch, semi-tailored pieces that are stylish enough for work, casual enough to play with her child in and dressy enough to wear out to dinner with her husband. The line includes tailored jackets and bottoms in stretch corduroy and stretch twill and blouses in matte jersey and silk charmeuse. Details such as buttons in coconut shell and horn, contrasting silk charmeuse seam bindings, and topstitching add a hip edge to the line. Wholesale prices are $60 to $90 for blouses and tunics, $90 to $120 for jackets, $75 to $90 for trousers, and $70 to $95 for skirts.
Currently, Bacher is focusing on opening boutique accounts and plans to open department store accounts in the future. The line is carried in several Southern California boutiques, including Patty Faye in the Silverlake district of Los Angeles, Kate in Montecito, Elahn in Studio City, Pink Leopard in Corona del Mar, and Shopgirls by Lisa and Helen in Costa Mesa.
