Americans tightened the purse strings in June, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, which found that consumer spending fell 0.7 percent. This marked the steepest drop since September 2001. A big part of the decline was caused by a decrease in auto sales. Analysts also said rising gas prices are cutting into consumers’ disposable income.
