L.A. Fashion Week Fall '04: Shay Todd

Glamour was paramount in the Shay Todd swimwear collection, shown on the runway on April 1 at Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek at Smashbox Studios in Culver City.

The designer, whose line has been out for three years, incorporated lots of glitz with gold and silver lameacute; sprinkled throughout the line.

The silhouettes were mostly skimpy, and bottoms rested low on the hips. Metal O-rings secured bikini tops and bottoms made from French and Italian fabrics.

“I really played with colors. Color is really a big thing for me,” said Todd, who took her inspiration from a recent vacation at a Mexican resort. “I had fun with bright tones and then a lot of fun, glitzy hardware.”

Todd mixed hot pink, yellow and lime green with more somber tones, such as olive green, deep brown and traditional black.

One of the most distinctive pieces in the collection was a nylon hammock dress used as a swimsuit coverup. It came in black and white and in long and short versions.

Her coverups collection of mini-robes, miniskirts, tube tops, cargo shorts and cargo pants came in a terry cloth that looked so soft you wanted to wrap it around you and snuggle on the beach.
