L.A. Fashion Week Fall '04: Single
Galina Sobolev drew inspiration for the Single Fall 2004 collection from the last days of disco but put her own spin on the era, creating dazzle and sparkle that spells out pure fun. The designer showed the collection on April 1 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City.
Sobolev injected a little rock ’n’ roll into the Studio 54 theme of her daywear and eveningwear. The show started with casual low-cut denim pants matched with crocheted halters, silk tube tops, wrap tops and tanks. The collection graduated to pleated denim skirts, silk layered skirts and flashy capelets and then went on to party and cocktail dresses in leopard and python prints. A full-glam mode—with sparkling long dresses ornamented with medallions, rings and fur—capped the show.
Sobolev highlighted the day collection with hand-painted silks that borrowed rich, intricate patterns from African and Tibetan pottery. Metallics ruled the eveningwear—the designer used gold alongside jacquards and matched charmeuse with brocades and burnt-gold effects. —R.M.
