L.A. Fashion Week Fall '04: Editte Keshishyan
For designer Editte Keshishyan, Fall in California isn’t just about black, gray and your occasional jewel tone. The designer let loose with a colorful palette and an assortment of shapes and cuts in her latest collection, shown on April 1 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City.
The designer accented her core fuchsia and teal shades with mixtures of apple green, rusty orange and brown. She played with cuts on backs and sleeves and shortened hemlines to offer sophistication and sexiness without getting trendy or trashy. A delicate black rayon bishop-sleeve top, silk jersey dresses with gathered waistlines, and dropped-shoulder tops and dresses were some examples of those treatments.
Occasionally, Keshishyan threw in some formal looks, such as a jersey tube dress with heavy ruching. She detailed her plunging-neckline dresses with ruffles or with off-the-shoulder cuts and loose cowls to bring some edginess to the line. Another key style was a chocolate-brown balloon skirt.
Keshishyan has come a long way in a short time. Only a few years ago, the young designer was a biology student at California State University, Long Beach. She switched her major to fashion and soon worked with Herve Leger in Paris before landing a short stint at BCBG MaxAzria. Now she’s aiming for the stars. —R.M.
