L.A. Fashion Week Fall '04: Davies
Los Angeles designer Erica Davies decided to stick with tradition and show a short film of her Davies collection rather than stage a runway show on March 31 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City.
Last season, Davies debuted her line at the Museum of Contemporary Art at the Geffen Contemporary with another short film shot by filmmaker Clement Jolin. The designer said she plans to continue with the same format.
“I’m very visual, and I’d like to maybe bring in the visual with the runway, but not just a straight runway,” Davies said. “Because I think visually, it creates more emotion to me to bring in the feeling of the clothes.”
Jolin shot the film in Death Valley, where Davies said the colors of the canyons, forms of the mountains and the feeling of serenity helped her create the look of the collection. The film shows two models walking down an empty road and across the desert with images of the mountains and sky in the backdrop, capturing the serene mood and clean lines of the collection. The film’s multiple locations within Death Valley helped to create different moods for different pieces of clothing, and its focus on details highlighted the special features of each garment.
Key looks included a black moleskin trench coat, a silk satin and jersey studded bib top and stretch-cotton skinny pant ensemble, a peacock-green jersey studded backless dress with a front tie, a silk dot-print buttoned top and taupe washed-cotton pants with pocket details, and a mauve silk jersey studded halter dress. —N.
