L.A. Fashion Week Spring '04: John Sakalis

John Sakalis’ formula for Spring 2004 combined lightweight fabrics, color and eye-catching prints. The emerging designer took and turned and twisted this simple recipe to create a collection that he said represents the strong, yet delicate woman of the 21st century.

At his Oct. 27 showing during Smashbox Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Sakalis went for airy looks that were reminiscent of the ’80s. Styles included bias cuts, stripes and an abundance of floral prints on chiffons. He offered some slashed detailing on sleeves—and even on the body of one dress—for a retro effect. But his collection also looked forward with asymmetrical cuts, unfinished edges and draped silhouettes.

Standouts included a red pleated floral chiffon bathing suit, a slashed oversize cap-sleeve shirt, a batwing-sleeve sweater with black nylon track pants, a white crinkled-silk bias-cut garden party dress, and a twisted tube top featuring a red swirl paired with Ultrasuede track pants.

This was Sakalis’ second solo show. The inspiration for the collection came from his sister, who he said embodies women who are “strong, vibrant, delicate, vulnerable, sexy, impossible, tolerant and most important, beautiful.” —R.M.
