L.A. Fashion Week Spring '04: Sue Wong
Dramatic costuming and timeless style were combined in day and eveningwear collections at Sue Wong’s runway show on Oct. 31 at Mercedes-Benz Shows L.A.
The theme? “Through the decades with Sue Wong,” said the Los Angeles designer backstage before the show.
Wong created more than six dozen silhouettes in silk devore, crinkledsilk, chiffon and charmeuse fabrications. Wong’s two collections, Sue Wong Collection and Sue Wong Nocturne, were combined for the show but divided into different themes, such as mod revival, swing era, raging ’20s and Hollywood glamour.
Wong’s day dresses consisted of mod-era styles featuring optical art— with Mondrian- and Miro-inspired prints—and bead accents, while her eveningwear showed her extravagant taste in nostalgia through cascading Edwardian-style slip gowns with draped beaded bodices and embroidered waistcoats. Wong even gave her own interpretation of surf style with a punky surfer-girl mini-dress with an exaggerated floral print. —C.F.
