L.A. Fashion Week Spring '04: Naissance on Melrose

Jennifer Noonan is constantly pushing the envelope for maternity style, and this season, she put it on the runway. Noonan staged her first runway show on Oct. 29 at Mercedes-Benz Shows L.A., showcasing the contemporary maternity looks she designs and sells at her Naissance on Melrose boutique in Los Angeles.

For Spring 2004, the retailer-turned-designer created a 48-piece collection that mixes California lifestyle with bohemian sensibilities.

“I’m a child of the ’60s and ’70s, so I’m constantly looking for ways to incorporate those kinds of looks into my collections,” said Noonan, whose collection features casual and dressy looks, including a hooded fishnet jacket worn over a tank top and matching grommet-embellished pants, a crisscross jersey top paired with a bohemian paisley silk wrap skirt, and a gold-dust lace bandeau dress. The designer chose a palette of soft, natural colors such as sea foam, butter, eggshell, clay, sand, pink, peony and white.

For the show, Noonan departed from some of her more-basic looks and dove headlong into sexy styles, such as velvet halter dresses with O-ring details, tube dresses, silk halter tops and skirts with a fandango pattern, and chiffon baby-doll tops. —C.F.
