L.A. Fashion Week Spring '04: Delphine

Women’s dress designer Delphine drew inspiration from her childhood memories of Paris to create a collection of tops, cocktail dresses, skirts and pants that transcended several eras. With actress Gabrielle Union sitting in the front row wearing a Delphine design, the tennis pro–turned–designer showed her first runway collection on Oct. 31 at Mercedes-Benz Shows L.A.

A prim black sleeveless boat-neck dress with pink piping evoked nostalgia with sensible style, while a 1920s-style beaded, embroidered lapis lazuli dress showed Delphine’s fun, whimsical side. Her black-andwhite sleeveless dress with a geometric print was modern with an elegant streak. Other pieces included an opal silk viscose jacket with pink fringes and a matching skirt, a polka-dot dress with a jewel neckline, and a gold-leaf one-shoulder dress with bead and paillette details. Other details included tiny tassels and art nouveau–inspired embroidered scenes that included dancing flappers with swinging fringed dresses and bucolic images of a woman tending to her sheep. —C.F.
