Apparel Exec to Discuss 3-D Sizing Technology

Ilona Foyer, president of Malibu, Calif.–based dressform maker Shapely Shadow Inc., will speak about 3-D scanning technology June 2 at an industry focus-group conference in New York. The United States Department of Defense Research Grant is sponsoring the event.

Foyer’s company uses imaging technology to create dress forms for the apparel industry. The PVC-based forms are created by a scanning machine, which generates digital images of a fit model and stores them in a database.

Retailers and manufacturers use the forms to calculate fit, said Shapely Shadow Principal Roxy Starr. The company strives to create repeatable, symmetrical dress forms to improve accurate specs and shapes.

“By creating a human ’clone,’ designers have unlimited access to an individual’s body without fittings,” said Starr, who added the forms also have been used by Hollywood production studios to outfit stars who do not want to spend all day in the wardrobe room.

Starr said that while organizations and surveys such as CAESAR (Civilian American and European Surface Anthropometry Resource) and Size UK have generated sizing charts for individuals, the information has not been accessible to apparel companies.
